Who is Erik van Zadel?

I am an Amsterdam born (1962) composer/arranger, pianist en percussionist. I'm interested in many music genres, of which jazz, R&B, en salsa are the most important. Mixing of genres is my specialty. My main influences are: Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Lalo Schifrin, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, George Duke, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tito Puente, Carlos Santana.

Current projects

At present, I'm working on a couple of songs, which, as the word plainly suggests, means that someone has to sing it. As I myself am not the most capable singer around, I'm looking for advanced singers (male/female) who have a serious ambition to earn a buck (or two) by recording, performing and selling quality music. You think you've got the V-factor (which stands for a great voice)? Please, feel free to mail me some sound snippets of yourself.

Furthermore, I am still looking for big bands to cooperate with. I've got some Basie-like stuff on the shelf, but would also love to write/arrange in more contemporary styles. So, bands/band leaders, send me your wishes or ask for a demo.

Musical background

Between my ninth and sixteenth I took classical piano lessons.(I would rather play the drums, but as my family lived in an apartment, this didn't seem a great idea).

From my teens I played keyboard in various pop, jazz and fusion bands.

In the eighties I learned more about jazz-piano from Nedley Elstak (Winner of the Boy Edgar Prijs 1983, a highly acclaimed jazz award in The Netherlands).

In 1998 I decided to take myself seriously as a drummer and took percussionlessons (conga, timbales and smaller percussion). During this lessons I gained knowledge of Cuban and Brazilian music, which also enabled me to broaden my field as a composer.
